Recently, many students have become concerned about the interactions between Campus Police and the rest of the MIT community. Although students appreciate that MIT retains its own police force and gratefully acknowledge the many ways the Campus Police go above and beyond their basic duty - such as the STOP device protection program and the annual Bike Auction - recent incidents have given students reason for concern.
As one example, in April 2008 a Waltham, Mass. resident filed suit against the MIT Police for use of “exessive force” during his arrest in February 2006 [1]. This suit has not yet come to trial, though MIT roundly denies any wrongdoing in the incident.
